About
A place where anyone can understand how public money could be spent better
ROptimizaRE is a data-journalism project about the efficiency of the Romanian state. It starts from a simple question: how could the state provide the same services, or better ones, for less money?
The answer is not a single measure. That is why we split the analysis into 17 topics, from local government and public procurement to state-owned companies and unused public property. For each one we look for the same three things:
- The diagnosis: what the official data shows about the situation in Romania.
- The comparison: how we compare with the EU average and with similar countries.
- The alternatives: what other countries did and what results they got, plus a transparent estimate of what could be gained.
What it is not
It is not a political site. It does not support parties, candidates or government programmes, and it does not recommend any particular reform. It is not a site of accusations either: we analyse public institutions and projects, not people.
How you can use the data
Everything we publish is based on public data. You can reuse the analyses and charts as long as you cite the original source of the data, which you will find at the end of each analysis.
